AP Bio project - 3D Model of Animal Cell - Help!

For our problem of the week this week, I need to create a 3D model of either a plant cell - or animal cell - and label and include all the organelles. Tomorrow in class, we're being called up randomly to explain the relationships.

I'm going to do an animal cell.

The thing is, my bio teacher wants it BIG. I'm going to use a styrofoam ball (biggest I can find - aiming for 12"), and cut out a quarter of it to use that as the 3D section.

Basically, I'm kind of stumped as what to use to represent certain organelles. I'm going to an arts and crafts store in about 1 hour or so.. so if anyone has any ideas - feel free to say them!

Here's a list of the organelles I need, and if I have any ideas for some, I'm putting them next to it.

Overall cell - styrofoam ball

Nucleus

Ribosomes - I was thinking the little cotton ball things

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum

rough endoplasmic reticulum

golgi apparatus

lysosomes

peroxisomes - buttons

vacuoles

mitochondria

microtubules - yarn

microfilaments - string

centrioles - twizzlers

Basically, I'm going to paint the "organelles" along with the "cell" and then hot glue them together.

On second thought.. do animal cells even have vacuoles? I think my mind may be deceiving me..

You could use something that is a clear bubble for a vacuole and maybe a cut sponge colored with marker for a mitochondria?
♥ Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away. We have roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossoms had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.♥

Oooh! Good idea! What kind of things would be a clear bubble? Maybe a plastic bag thing tied up?

Animal cells do have vacuoles, but they are smaller than the one in plant cells. There are multiple vacuoles in an animal cell. Are you forgetting the nucleoulus?

Nucleus - a large marble (only if you are not adding the nucleoulus in)

Ribosomes - I was thinking the little cotton ball things

Smooth endoplasmic reticulum - A cut up old SMOOTH rubber bathmat.

rough endoplasmic reticulum - A cut up old rubber bathmat with nubs on it.

golgi apparatus - a series of paper cups smashed into each other

lysosomes - ????

peroxisomes - buttons

vacuoles - a "air button" from those air filled packing materials

mitochondria - ????

microtubules - yarn

microfilaments - string

centrioles - twizzlers
